Easter

EASTER

by Carolyn
Special to Wintrompo

Easter is over and forgotten by many. But in our house it goes on, thanks to grandparents.

Our actual Easter day was low-key...

...since Rey’s too young to dye eggs and I don’t really feel like explaining the whole resurrection thing to him yet either. He had brought home a little basket from Ana’s Family Daycare, but he was more interested in the plastic grass and eggs than the chocolate. Tom wasn’t unhappy with that arrangement and stepped up to his fatherly duty of making sure the chocolate didn’t go to waste. Rey did receive a stuffed duck from our home-based Easter bunny, complete with polka dots and buttons. But that was all in the past.

At least, until Friday night. We knew there was a package coming and we had received a notice from our friendly neighborhood UPS guy, but he was snoozing or something so a whole day went by and we didn’t get another notice or a package. Then Friday, post bath, Rey’s already in his pajamas and the doorbell rings. It’s 7:30 PM. Who could it be? Rey runs to the door expectantly, cute little doggie pajamas on, then gets all shy when the door actually opens. It’s UPS! Wait—7:30 on Friday? What was this guy doing all day? Never mind, we’re just glad to get the package.

We all go to the kitchen to open the package. Rey is clearly excited and curious. He waits while we open the box, and there’s another, smaller box inside concealing the contents. We set it down on the floor and lift off the smaller box.

“It’s BUNNIES!” Rey shouts. It’s possibly the best package he’s received in his short life. Yes, it’s a basket of no less than seven “bunnies.” Technically, one is a pig, there’s also a cow and a lamb, but for the purpose of this discussion they’re bunnies. They are very cutely attired in handmade sweaters and dresses and we hastily snip them out of their basket and Rey grabs them all and plays with them the rest of the evening.

Shortly after this it’s bedtime. I attempt to leave the bunnies on the floor, but no, the bunnies have to join us in the rocking chair and Rey snuggles up them while I’m singing. Then, yes, the bunnies go into the crib with Rey.

“It’s a lot of bunnies,” he murmurs as I’m setting him down into his crib.
Do I need to mention everyone joined us in bed the next morning?

Thanks, Grandma Suzy and Grandpa Phil.
